| Here's a rundown of road lingo:
Germ: (pronounced with a hard 'g,' may be spelled "gurm" or "gherm"; there is some etymological confusion) Someone who tries to get as close as possible, as often as possible to an entertainer. Living in the Fishbowl: Sitting on the bus with crowds of people trying to look through the windows. (The windows on Marty's bus are heavily tinted, but not so heavily tinted are the ones on the crew bus. So if the interior lights are on at night, it's good to be on your best behavior.) Swag: Anything you get free on the road: T-shirts, food, etc. Gifts of an alcoholic nature are referred to as "liquid swag." Merch: Souvenirs related to the performer, sold on site. Swag Hag: A female selling merch. Squints: Crew in charge of lighting (so named because they are always looking up into bright lights). Grunts: Crew in charge of sound (so named because of the noises they make when testing microphones). Vidiots: Anyone operating a video recorder or filming at a performance. Burnt: Been on the road too long, need to get home. Road Dog: Can't get enough of the road. Boof: Very attractive woman. According to legend, this originated from a "Gilligan's Island" episode in which Gilligan kept whacking the Skipper in the belly with a club, and the Skipper would say, "Booofff, little buddy!" Traveling musicians say the same thing when they see a purty gurl. "Boofff!"
Fluffed It: Made a mistake, missed a chord, played the wrong note. Fluked It: Handled things, took care of the situation. Etymology: Johnny Cash's former drummer and road manager was known for dealing bluntly and effectively with performers; his nickname was Fluke. |
