Eric Church
lit up Marty Stuart‘s Late Night Jam at the 2015
CMA Music Festival on Wednesday (June 10), and he
played a rather surprising (yet amazing) tune:
Little Big Town‘s “Girl Crush.”
The Late Night Jam is the annual kickoff to the CMA Music Festival. This year, it lasted nearly four hours, with Stuart, who hosted the event, welcoming guests like the Brothers Osborne, Charley Pride and Stuart’s wife, Connie Smith, to the stage throughout the evening. Church took the stage a little after 1 a.m., wowing the crowd with a cover of “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’,” which Stuart made famous in 1991 with Travis Tritt. Stuart joined Church on that cover, and then Church brought some others onto the stage: Chris Stapleton (plus his wife Morgane) and Phillip Sweet and Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town. The group of stars covered the Band‘s “The Weight,” with each vocalist singing a verse. Then, much to the fans’ delight, Church began strumming some familiar chords — the opening to LBT’s “Girl Crush.” His rocker voice made the sexy and controversial song even more interesting, and Fairchild finished out the tune with Church.
