What’s the most enjoyable way to spend the Fourth of July? Consider the annual “Light of Liberty” celebration at Island Park in downtown Springfield, starting at 4 p.m. July 4, 2013.

Hosted each summer by the Springfield Utility Board (SUB), the festival encourages visitors to “ditch your street shoes, dig out your flip flops and head to Island Park” for the best summertime party in Springfield. Music, food, activities for all ages and a 10 p.m. fireworks show highlight a festival fundraiser that is now in its 10th year.

This year’s headlining act is Marty Stuart, Grand Ole Opry star and Grammy-winning rockabilly, honky-tonk and country artist. Stuart is a platinum recording artist and has won five Grammy music awards. He also avidly pursues Southern culture and history, photography, songwriting and has been a TV show host, according to SUB.

There will also be music by blues and jazz powerhouse “Deb Cleveland Band” and “Mystery Train,” a Springfield classic rock band that has frequently appeared and headlined at Light of Liberty in past years.

While having the chance to enjoy the Fourth of July, visitors will also be helping low-income residents. According to the SUB website, proceeds from “Light of Liberty” benefit Project Share, a fund to assist fixed-income and low-income residents with winter heating expenses.
