Marty Stuart, National Spokesman for the American Indian Freedom Ride

June 2003

Marty Stuart, a legendary country and bluegrass musician has graciously stepped forward to act as the National Spokesman for the American Indian Freedom Ride. Marty has made a TV public service announcement as well as a radio public service announcement promoting the Freedom Ride. Mr. Stuart married Connie Smith on the Pine Ride Indian reservation, and knows first hand the difficulties arising from living on the reservation. Pine Ridge is like numerous other reservations, in that there are a limited amount of resources and opportunities for each individual. He personally knows and understands on a level we don't see very often, and we are very proud that Marty has donated his time and resources to the Freedom Ride and Native Americans.

Marty Stuart began playing professionally at the age of 12 with Lester Flatt. He is a child prodigy on mandolin and guitar and has since played with nearly all of the legends of country music. After playing for some years as Johnny Cash's guitar player, Marty struck out on his own. He has garnered three Grammy's and numerous songwriter awards. He also is known as a great producer, and has worked with Bob Dylan, BB King, John Lee Hooker, Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen, among others. Marty is a member of the Grand Ole Opry, and can be frequently seen on it and CMT productions. His current band, the Fabulous Superlatives are distinctive in each of their own right: they are Brian Nolf on bass (far left), Kenny Vaughan on guitar, and Harry Stinson on the drums (far right). If you ever have the chance to see these guys do, the show is pumped. Together they are excellent musicians and deliver from the heart, as country and rockabilly music are to do.

Marty's new album will be released July 2003. It is titled Country Music. He collaborated with Merle Haggard on one tune and has a fantastic band backing him. The album is on the Columbia Label. Check it out, especially the track called "By George."

Marty and his Fabulous Superlatives will be on the Electric Barnyard Tour with Merle Haggard, Connie Smith, BR 549, Rhonda Vincent and several others. Check out tour dates on his site or on Pollstar.com.
