Marty Stuart and Connie Smith were married July 8 in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. It is the second marriage for Stuart, 38, and the fourth for Smith, 55. Stuart was divorced in 1988 from Cindy Cash, daughter of Johnny Cash. Smith has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1965.
Anyone desiring more details about this sudden union can contact Marty on August 15 when he'll be performing in a concert benefiting the Autry Museum of Western Heritage at Griffith Park in Los Angeles. Stuart, whose newest MCA release is "Sweet Love" from his album Honky Tonkin's What I Do Best, is a long-time fan of Gene Autry, for whom the museum is named. An avid collector of mementos himself, Stuart has loaned a portion of his souvenirs to be shown in an exhibit traveling with the Fruit of the Loom Country Comfort Music Series.
When Opry star Bill Anderson asked Smith recently why she didn't change her ordinary sounding name to something more exotic, she quipped, "I did, two or three times." Glen Campbell responded to the wedding announcement with, "Well that's great. She can tame ol' Marty."
