Marty Stuart has
been a touring musician since he was 13 and
playing mandolin for Lester Flatt. By the time
he reached his 20's he was on the road with
Johnny Cash and had played with everyone from
Bill Monroe to Jerry Lee Lewis.
When it came time to embark on a solo career, he
had learned a thing or two. Stuart carved a spot
for himself among the cowboy-hat acts that were
popular at the time by combining traditional
country music with honky-tonk and rockabilly.
Ealier this month, Stuart released a two-disc
set, Saturday Night /Sunday Morning,
with his band the Fabulous Superlatives. The
album showcases two strands of the country
tradition: honky-tonk rock and roll and gospel
hymns. The band plays Friday night at Tower
Theatre.
