Pop Quiz - Marty Stuart

This appeared in Country Weekly - March 13, 2007

Marty Stuart has been tagged "Country Music's Renaissance Man" for good reason: he's a singer, songwriter, musician, theatrical composer, photographer, actor, producer, historian, author, bluegrass aficionado, TV host and comic book hero. And, also to his credit, he's married to one of country music's great ladies, Connie Smith. We caught up with Marty in North Bethesda, Maryland before his show at the Strathmore Music Center to give him a Pop Quiz.

C.W.: Where were you the first time you heard your first record on the radio?

Marty: I was on a Los Angeles freeway during rush hour. It was a song called "Arlene". I liked it, but I didn't love it. It was a bittersweet experience.

C.W.: What will you never forget?

Marty: I'll never forget the first time I heard country music. It came out of the speakers in my record player that my aunt bought me. It was a Flatt and Scruggs record. The next one I heard was a Johnny Cash record. It totally captivated my heart.

C.W.: What would your fans be surprised to find out about you?

Marty: That I'm a wonderful flower arranger. If you need some flowers arranged, call me. We've got the prettiest floral arrangements on our bus usually at all times.

C.W.: Where would you be right this minute if you could put yourself there?

Marty: In Connie Smith's arms.

C.W.: Can you keep a secret or do you have to tell just one person?

Marty: I can keep a secret. What do you want to tell me?

C.W.: Have you ever had a supernatural experience?

Marty: Several times. I believe in the Holy Spirit ... I expect them on a daily basis. I look for them.

C.W.: What do you know for sure?

Marty: That when it's all over, I get to take the ultimate road trip. I get to go to heaven.
