Gospel and Blues great Roebuck "Pops" Staples and country music star Marty Stuart were among the nine recipients of the 1999 Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts. Staples was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award while Stuart took home an Artist's Achievement Award from the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Governor's Office.
