John Ascuaga's Nugget - Sparks NV - May 13-17, 1999

Saturday, May 15, 1999 - Day 3

All this is becoming a habit now....wake up, go to mall, develop pics, more awesome pics. They are all so good its tough to pick one over the other. We saw a used record store and decided to pop in to see if they had anything we needed. No CDs of Marty's that we didn't already have. We all scattered looking at different things and I roamed to the back of the store where old albums were, looked around and found a section on Lester Flatt. Found 3 with Marty on them. Who says you have to play the slots to hit the jackpot?

Off we go to lunch and back to the hotel. This day is pretty much like the others except I went back to the room and took a nap. Must have been a power nap because 15 minutes later I bolted right up in bed and said "What have you always wanted ever since you first heard Marty sing 'Arlene' years ago?" I have dreamed of sitting just 5 minutes and talking to him just me and him. What do you think the chances are..... never.... Don't give up on your dreams because sometimes God looks upon you and gives you the desires of your heart. So.... I decided to ask Mike tonight if I could interview Marty for Sherry's website.....if I didn't lose my nerve.

The routine begins again only this time familiar faces from home.... Glenda and Clarence. They stopped in on their way to see their grandchildren in Calif. They looked great and were very excited. I showed her the picture I had blown up and she had one when she was on Prime Time Country in the make-up chair with Marty. What a great memory for a very great lady.

We still had time to kill so I went over to look at the tee shirts and looked at the gold record you could special order. I told Jimmy I sure would like to have that and he said, "You said that in Wilmington. You better get it." I said "Maybe some day." Off we go to play a few slots. Jamie and I sat down across from one another and started to play. I put in 20 bucks and said, "If this goes, then I'll be in the laundry room for sure!" Rolled a couple times and 3 real pretty red 7's came up. 300 Marty Bucks. I can see that gold record now! I stick my head around toward Jamie and she is stickin' her head around toward me, she hit for 200. Shut UP!! We are in the chips.!! We went back to the line and told the gals. They couldn't believe it. We were only gone 10 minutes. Routine begins. I'll skip all that and get to the good stuff. MARTY!!

Tonight Marty is wearing black pants with roses appliqued up the legs. Black shirt. Now there is this girl at a table across from us and she is just about to go over the edge... she is just screamin' and yellin'. Marty looks at her and says "Let it out honey, don't hold it in, We're gonna have a good time." The set is the same but after "We Are The Lonely," he did "Dark as a Dungeon." AWESOME!!!!!!! Right up there with "Long Black Veil." Goosebumps and cold chills.

This time after "Reasons," he did "Draggin' Around These Chains of Love." He looked out and saw Glenda and Clarence and his face just lit up. Another women yelled "Tuck your shirt in." He yelled back,, "Take yours off! You got $25? He did a guitar jam in Bb, according to the set list and "Hillbilly Rock." He waved and started to walk off stage and the shirt-tuck lady runs up on stage with $25. He takes it, hugs her, and gives the money back and walks off. The crowd is wild!!!! He comes back ....Shirt tucked in and the waist band has diamonds around it. He does "Western Girls" and is gone.

Now Mike comes out and tells us there will be a M/G.....just hang on. He said "You guys left too soon last night. When he came out, you were all gone!" I know the look on our faces must have been something! Now I am really nervous...should I, should I not ask, what can he do but tell me no. I must have been mumbling to Heather because Mike looked at me and said, "What are you talkin' about?" Well, its now or never. I said "Well come over here and I'll tell you." He walked over and I said "Sherry had asked me to do a review of the shows for her website and I was wondering if I could ask him a few questions." He said "When you going home?" I said "Monday morning." He said "Well, lets try for Sunday night. Find me after the show and I'll see what I can do." I said "thanks" and promptly began to shake like a leaf.

Marty came out and asked Glenda "What in the world are you doin' way out here....following Clarence??" There were only 8 tonight so it went pretty quick. I had him sign the picture I blew up and asked what he did with the drawing I gave him in Wilmington. He said "It's in my warehouse with my other treasures..I love it. Thank you." Got the all important hug and moved on.

The night is still young and I am no way ready to call it a night. So I go over to Jimmy and I tell him I hit the jackpot. Get out that order sheet. He just busted out laughing and said, "I knew you would end up getting it." Placed my order. He said I should have it in about 4 weeks. We walked back to the bar and then the unbelievable happened ...we were invited to hear the new album!! I am telling you now RUN do not walk to the store to get it the day it comes out. It's nothing like he has ever done before. Words can not do it justice. It is fabulous. I still cannot believe I got to hear it and all this could happen to me. Sometime soon I will have to wake up! Stay Tuned.
