John Ascuaga's Nugget - Sparks, NY on October 8-14, 1998

Part 2

Sunday we all slept in and then went to brunch before my sister, Leah and DeAnna went home. They didn't want to go but had to get back to work. Deana and I lounged most of the afternoon to recoup for the night to come. We met Sheila about 5:30 p.m. and hung out playing roulette till we got seated. We weren't sure we were going to get our table tonight because the floor had been bought out by a Burger King Convention. But our hostesses Maggie came through for us!! She seated us down there anyway!! ( Of course tipping them $20 a night hadn't hurt either!)

So after us whining about not being able to get our table, when the guys came out they were happy to see us at our table. They did most of the new material tonight since Tony Brown was there to hear the new stuff. But nothing we hadn't heard before, but still didn't do "I Can't Help It"!!! Afterwards, we went to play!! It was Deana's last night we we stayed up most of the night. I ended up playing blackjack and winning about $175.00. I had a cheering section for a while of Deana, Randy, and Jimmy. There were 2 guys and me at the table for 3 hours!! We had a blast!

Monday, I got up and drove Deana to the airport. Then went back and Sheila called me to make sure I was O.K. We met about 4:30 and played for a while before we got in line. We had a blast by ourselves!! We hooted and yelled our way through the show. She can certainly come with me anytime to a show!! I was a little worried about being by myself but I'm glad I had her for Monday!! She and her husband David are wonderful people. I ended hanging with them for a couple hours afterward. I went back to the room and couldn't sleep. So I went back to the casino and ended playing more blackjack. I ended up about $250.00 up total. And I ended up running into most if the crew while I was down there. I don't know how they do it, but I guess they can sleep all day.

Well, Tuesday, was my first day all alone. I slept in needless to say and had a nice quiet afternoon. I headed down and ran into Jimmy and Randy as soon as I walked out. When they found out I was by myself, they elected themselves my "guardians". The show was a little different, Marty was in a weird mood. He was taking requests, which the band just "loves." He ended wording about 4 lines of "Western Girls" and then he did "That's What Love's About." I always get teary when he does that one. He also did "Hobo's Prayer" again. His voice was still a little hoarse but the week was almost over and the weather is very dry up there. I ended up running into most of the guys afterward at one time or another. Big Brother Steve kept me company for awhile and made sure no weirdos were bothering me. I stayed up too late again....go figure.

Wednesday was a sad day, since it was the last show. They were all in good moods, since it meant they were finally going home! After a month on the road, they were all ready to get back home. The show was a great end to a wonderful week. Marty did make a point of acknowledging those of us who had been there all week and thanking us. They did a rockin' rendition of "Little Things." Better than normal!! And then he closed out the week with "Hobo's Prayer."

I have to say that the entire week was a treat. Marty always makes us feel special and he did this little bow and point thing at us as he would exit the stage. Finally on Monday, I started bowing back. The entire band and crew made us feel like family and took extra special care of me when I was by myself. I have never hesitated going to a show by myself if I had too and I thank them for that. They are the best group of Southern Gentlemen I know!! Every time we saw them either in the casino or in a restaurant, they made a point of stopping and talking, which they didn't have to do. When people ask me why I do this, all I have to do is think about times like these. I have met my very dearest friends at shows and I hope to continue to do so for many years to come.

I hope this gave you all an insight to my week!! And let's hope we all get to do it again!
