Marty Stuart is a very talented musician, but I have found that his albums on CBS and MCA have not shown that same dynamism that his early recordings revealed. This album released on CMH are of Marty's performances with Lester Flatt and/or Nashville Grass. Marty was just 13 when he joined Lester Flatt in 1972 and he stayed with the great man until the end of 1978.
The recordings on this album are a mix of live and studio sessions, and he is featured playing mandolin and lead guitar and singing. It is hard to believe that Marty was only age 20 when he left Lester Flatt. It is sad that the dictates of contemporary country music mean that the individuality that is a mark of Bluegrass playing has to be subjugated.
