A Fan Reviews Marty's Book

There's a book out; "Pilgrims: sinners, saints and prophets" by Marty Stuart, the country singer/musician. It is a collection of photographs he has taken over the past 30 years. Stuart started in the business as a 13-year-old mandolin player with Lester Flatt, and since then has worked with nearly everyone in the country and bluegrass fields. He spent several years in the early 80s as a member of Johnny Cash's band, which he refers to as a "rockabilly" band on several occasions in the book.

There are hundreds of great photos of Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Bill Monroe and dozens of other stars, and Stuart's text is a treat, too. I was expecting a lot more photos of his incredible memorabilia collection (Stuart has a warehouse full of stuff including Hank Williams' pistols), but he focuses on the people in this book. It is worth a look.

While on the subject, you can see some of the Stuart photos in the current issue (July/August 2000) of Oxford American, if you can find a copy.
